For years, the Open Source community has pioneered products and services that eventually moved out
to the business side of networking. OpenDNS is just such a product.

Founded in 2005, OpenDNS introduced a functional and cost-effective solution to a much needed
business protection service. As the Internet became a required business asset, malicious websites grew
at a disproportionate rate presenting a massive risk of web users landing on intentionally infected
websites. Once there, virus infections, key loggers and backdoor hacks were almost certain and
infections were now in the heart of the network exposing all company data to theft and compromise.

OpenDNS was founded to prevent this. When users click to go to a website, networks using OpenDNS
have those requests routed to the company Servers where the Domain Name Resolution is done before
the request can move on to the selected website.

If the website is known to be infected, OpenDNS displays a warning that the user has requested access
to an infected site and access is blocked.

Cisco now owns the company and it has been rebranded to Cisco Umbrella. The world-wide database
covering bad sites is constantly updated so most threats coming in from this angle are blocked. Again,
this is a per-seat fee item so it is fully manageable and highly cost-effective.
